Yana’s Piano Lessons

Private piano instruction in Dublin, California

Piano lessons in Dublin, for every age

For more than two decades, Ms. Yana has guided students to the piano and watched them fall in love with it — from young children reaching for their very first notes to lifelong dreamers finally sitting down at the keys in retirement.

Every lesson is patient, personal, and built around the student in front of her. No two learners are alike, and no two lesson plans are either.

About

A teacher who has seen it all — and still loves the first lesson most

Ms. Yana in her home studio

Ms. Yana has spent over two decades at the piano bench beside her students. In that time she has taught children who could barely reach the pedals, teenagers preparing for recitals and auditions, busy parents carving out a half hour a week for themselves, and retirees finally keeping a promise they made to themselves long ago.

What hasn’t changed is her belief that anyone can learn to play beautifully when they’re taught with patience. She teaches technique and musicianship properly — posture, reading, rhythm, tone — while keeping the joy of making music at the center of every lesson.

“I’ve taught children who could barely reach the pedals, and adults who waited most of a lifetime to begin. What I want for all of them is the same — to read music with confidence, to understand what they’re playing, and to sit down at any piano and feel at home there.”

— Ms. Yana

What students learn

Real foundations, lesson by lesson

  • Proper technique from day one — hand position, posture, and relaxed, confident fingers.
  • Reading music fluently — notes, rhythm, and key signatures taught at a comfortable pace.
  • Musicality and expression — dynamics, phrasing, and pedaling that make a piece sing.
  • A serious classical repertoire — the great composers, Royal Conservatory of Music selections, and works from the Russian classical piano tradition.
  • Theory that makes sense — scales, chords, and ear training woven into real pieces.
  • Performance confidence — for recitals, graded exams, school auditions, or just for yourself.

Approach

Taught in the Russian piano tradition

Ms. Yana teaches in the Eastern European tradition of the Russian piano school — the approach behind generations of concert pianists. It puts unusual weight on the fundamentals: a relaxed, well-formed hand from the very first lesson, close attention to tone, and technical work that is never separated from the music it serves.

Within that framework, lessons are never one-size-fits-all. Ms. Yana listens first — to what makes you light up — and builds from there, following a combination of books chosen for each student’s own learning level.

Progress is steady and visible. Students leave each lesson knowing exactly what to work on, and families always know how things are going.

Can adults start learning piano from scratch?

Absolutely. Many of Ms. Yana’s students begin as adults, including some in their 60s and 70s. Adult beginners are taught without rush or judgment and typically start playing real music sooner than they expect.

What teaching method does Ms. Yana follow?

Ms. Yana teaches in the Eastern European tradition of the Russian piano school. It is known for building a thorough technical foundation — relaxed hand position, careful tone production, and disciplined practice — while keeping technique tied to the music it serves. In practice that means the fundamentals are taught properly from the first lesson, and theory is learned alongside playing rather than as a separate subject.

What books and materials are used?

There’s no single method book. Depending on the student’s level, Ms. Yana introduces a variety of composers, books and theory work at the right time — drawing on everything from the Royal Conservatory of Music’s graded series to the Russian classical piano tradition. Theory is taught alongside playing rather than as a separate subject, so students come to understand the music in front of them and not just the notes. The result is a balanced mix of exercises that build technique and musical complexity together.

Does Ms. Yana prepare students for exams?

Yes, for students who want that path. Ms. Yana prepares interested students for graded piano examinations, including the Royal Conservatory of Music’s. Exams are entirely optional, though — many students never sit one and simply play for the joy of it, and lessons are just as rewarding either way.

What will my child learn?

Young students learn proper technique, how to read music fluently, rhythm and counting, basic theory, and expressive playing — building toward recital pieces they can perform with confidence.
